Zimbabwe Attains Wheat Self-Sufficiency

Wheat output has risen by more than 540 percent from under 100 000 tonnes in 2019 to current levels, pushing the country into self-sufficiency in soft wheat and sharply reducing import dependence.

Economist Dr Reneth Mano said improved local varieties and record harvests are set to cut imports below 150 000 tonnes in 2025, a rare achievement last seen only a few times since 2010/11, despite growing demand from bakeries and food processors.

Looking ahead, consumption is projected to rise to 650 000 tonnes in 2026, firmly positioning wheat as Zimbabwe’s second most consumed starch after maize.
