The 2026 Chancellor's Games for Zimbabwe State Universities have entered a decisive phase, with quarter-final and semi-final matches taking place today at Great Zimbabwe University, the host of this year's tournament.
The annual sporting event, which began on July 19 and runs until July 26, has brought together staff from state universities across the country to compete in a wide range of sporting disciplines. The opening and closing days of the tournament have been reserved for travel.
Competition got underway with athletics on the first day before teams moved into group-stage action across various sport codes, including men's and women's soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, pool, darts, mini-soccer and table tennis.
With the tournament now in its knockout stages, teams are battling for places in the finals, which will be played before the event concludes.
Midlands State University (MSU) has emerged as one of the standout institutions, with its teams reaching the final stages in several disciplines. MSU remains in contention for honours in netball, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's pool, as well as women's soccer.
Speaking to MSU Radio News, Technical Director of the Chancellor's Games for Zimbabwe State Universities, Olivarth Guvuriro, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the tournament.
"The tournament is proceeding as scheduled. Everything is going according to the programme. The games are being played very well, and the participants are cooperating and enjoying themselves," said Guvuriro.
Organisers say the smooth flow of fixtures and the high level of participation have contributed to the success of the tournament so far, with staff athletes displaying competitive spirit and sportsmanship across all sporting codes.
As the competition heads towards the finals, anticipation continues to build as universities compete for top honours in one of the country's premier inter-university staff sporting events.
