Residents of Gweru have been praised for their active participation in the First Friday Cleanup Campaign held across the city last Friday, with local authorities describing the initiative as a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability and public health.

The cleanup exercise brought together residents, businesses, government departments, and various organizations who worked collectively to remove litter, clear illegal dumping sites, and improve the cleanliness of public spaces.

Speaking during the campaign, Gweru Mayor Councillor Martin Chivhoko commended the community for embracing the initiative and demonstrating a shared commitment to maintaining a clean city.
“The response from residents has been encouraging. A clean environment is everyone’s responsibility, and we are pleased to see people taking ownership of their surroundings. However, cleanliness should not be limited to the First Friday Cleanup Campaign. We encourage residents to make environmental hygiene a daily practice in their homes, workplaces, and communities,” said Councillor Chivhoko.

The cleanup campaign coincided with commemorations of World Environment Day, adding further significance to the exercise. Stakeholders used the occasion to raise awareness on the importance of environmental conservation and responsible waste management.

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) joined the campaign alongside residents and local authorities. Speaking to MSU Radio, Environmental Management Officer Sally Maguvu applauded the community for supporting the initiative and highlighted the importance of sustained environmental stewardship.

“Community participation is critical in achieving a cleaner and healthier environment. We are encouraged by the level of involvement shown by residents today. Environmental protection requires continuous effort, and we urge citizens to continue disposing of waste responsibly and protecting natural resources,” said Maguvu.

Sally Maguvu said continued collaboration between residents, local government, and environmental agencies will be essential in maintaining cleanliness and creating a healthier urban environment for future generations.
