Midlands State University (MSU) secured first position at the Sanganayi Scholastica Midlands Provincial Competitions on 01 September 2026, reaffirming its growing contribution to innovation, knowledge generation and value addition in Zimbabwe.
The competition brought together tertiary institutions to showcase innovative ideas and solutions aimed at advancing Zimbabwe’s tourism sector, providing a platform for students to demonstrate how innovation can support growth, competitiveness and sustainable development in the industry.
In her opening remarks, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business Sciences, Dr M. Mugwati, emphasised the importance of teamwork in fostering innovation and development, noting that collective effort is essential for transforming ideas into impactful solutions.
“Development is not realised by individuals working in isolation; it is through teamwork, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas that we can create solutions that drive meaningful progress,” said Dr Mugwati.
Speaking during the event, the Executive Director of the Research and Innovation Division, Professor G. Mehlana, urged students to look beyond simply winning competitions and focus on transforming their innovative ideas into viable solutions that can be commercialised and contribute to Zimbabwe’s development.
“Do not enter competitions merely to win a prize; come with ideas that can be developed, commercialised, and transformed into solutions that shape the future,” said Professor Mehlana.
The MSU team, TourSafe, impressed the judges with its presentation of an innovative application designed to enhance safety and convenience in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector.
The project demonstrated the potential of student-led innovation to address practical challenges while creating opportunities for value addition in the tourism industry.
In her closing remarks, MSU Faculty of Business Sciences lecturer and Provincial Coordinator for the competitions, Ms. P. Mbwana, expressed her gratitude to everyone whose dedication and support contributed to the successful hosting of the event.
The achievement reflects MSU’s commitment to producing holistic students equipped with the knowledge, creativity, practical skills and collaborative mindset to address real-world challenges and develop innovative solutions that contribute to meaningful industrialisation and the modernisation of Zimbabwe’s economy.
