The Masvingo Regional Magistrates' Court has sentenced a 36-year-old man from Gutu to an effective 40 years' imprisonment after convicting him on two counts of rape involving a minor.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the offences were committed against the man's biological daughter over a period when she was under his care.
Court proceedings heard that the abuse was eventually disclosed to a trusted relative, leading to an immediate report to social welfare authorities and law enforcement. The case was investigated, resulting in the accused's arrest, prosecution, and subsequent conviction.
The court imposed an effective 40-year prison sentence following the conviction.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said the judgment underscores the justice system's commitment to protecting children from abuse.
"The law will protect children, especially from those who weaponize parental trust," the NPAZ said.
The authority also commended the survivor's courage in disclosing the abuse and acknowledged the role played by relatives and community child protection services in ensuring the matter was reported.
"Protecting children is a collective responsibility. If you see something or suspect abuse, speak out immediately," the NPAZ said.
Authorities continue to encourage members of the public to report suspected child abuse to the relevant authorities so that children can receive protection and those responsible can be held accountable through the justice system.
In an interview with MSU Radio News, women rights organizations and child rights movements applauded the NPAZ for its commitment to prosecuting offenders.
