The tournament aims to keep learners engaged in sport, discourage drug and substance abuse, and select provincial teams for the national championships to be held in Harare.
Speaking to MSU Radio News, District Schools Inspector Luke Matutu said the competitions help build character, promote teamwork and encourage respect among learners, while also providing a platform to identify and nurture sporting talent.
Matutu added that the games also promote domestic tourism as learners travel to different parts of the country for competitions and sport can create career opportunities not only for athletes but also in coaching, officiating and sports management.
