The Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged parents, guardians, motorists, transport operators and school authorities to prioritize the safety and security of learners as schools open for the 2026 second term.

In a statement released yesterday, the police warned against children travelling at night, saying this exposes learners to road traffic accidents and criminal activities.
The ZRP also called on motorists and transport operators to ensure that vehicles transporting school children are roadworthy, properly insured and compliant with road traffic regulations.

Drivers were urged to avoid speeding, reckless overtaking, overloading and driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous drugs. Motorists were also encouraged to exercise caution near pedestrian crossings, schools and other built-up areas.

Meanwhile, public service vehicle operators have been warned against overloading passengers and mixing goods or luggage with school children.

The police further urged school authorities to strengthen security measures at learning institutions and avoid keeping large sums of money on school premises, warning that this may attract armed robberies and other criminal activities.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterated that road safety and crime prevention require cooperation from all members of the community to ensure the protection of learners this school term.
