The Government of Zimbabwe has reintroduced Zupco buses on intercity routes in Gweru this week to ease transport challenges, offering commuters a cheaper alternative of US$0.50 per trip compared to up to US$1 charged by private operators, following recent fuel price increases that doubled fares.
The move comes after commuter omnibus operators raised fares from US$0.50 to as much as US$1 per trip in response to rising fuel costs, placing significant strain on residents.
Gweru District Development Coordinator Tarisai Mudadigwa confirmed the rollout of the buses, saying the intervention is aimed at cushioning commuters from escalating transport costs
